Continuous investment in packaging print

Monday, November 4th, 2013

The Sherwood Press has recently invested in a new Bobst Expertfold 110 A2 folder-gluer machine to reaffirm its commitment to packaging print in the UK. The Bobst Expertfold 110 A2 was installed in the Nottingham plant at the beginning of November 2013 linking with the realignment of the current finishing equipment. The machine enables folding for a massive range of applications, from smaller, delicate products such as confectionery packaging, mass-scale items such as food packaging and the more robust corrugate packaging.

Bobst Expertfold replaces Sherwood’s Vega folding and gluing machine and it will allow the printer to more than double the capacity. The kit can process paper and cartonboard at speeds up to 450m/min, delivering a superb gluing and folding quality as well as perfect packing. Other features include a reduction in set up times and the C.U.B.E box which rejects non-conforming boxes without stopping the production.

The Group’s Technical Works Manager, Mark Ashforth commented: “Having gained experience of working with Bobst machinery in the past, I am confident the new kit is going to take Sherwood’s capabilities for packaging print to a different level in both quality and efficiency”.

A recent purchase of the new Bobst Expertfold folding and gluing line is part of the Group’s continuous investment in its Pura Packaging business, worth £3 million in total. During the course of the past two years, Sherwood has boosted its capacity with Kodak plate making equipment, Komori Lithrone S640, Heidelberg Easygluer purchased in 2011, and a new Iberica Optima 105 die-cutting machine which was installed at the plant in December 2012.

Mirroring the investments in the UK, the Group has also started Phase Three investment at the Semplice plant in Dongguan City (China), focusing on development of the packaging offering in the Far East business. This will include new gluing lines, pick and place window patching equipment that will be installed at Semplice by the end of January 2014.

Graham Garrod, the Group’s Managing Director added: “Continuous investment and improvement in our production capabilities and staff expertise are pivotal to ensuring that we offer our customers the best printing and finishing solution available. Sherwood has also seen more investment in the double coating facilities on our Komori press and our CAD and graphic design team continue generating innovative packaging designs.”
