KMD Company, part of The Sherwood Group, are joining forces with the University of Nottingham and a number of industry partners to develop a new, self-sterilising desiccant mask, called ‘SterilMask’ to help tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
‘SterilMask’ features highly efficient desiccant material for continuous sterilisation without damaging the mask’s filtration capability and breathability. The technology could provide an additional layer of defence against COVID-19 and future pandemics.
KMD Company and The Sherwood Group have provided the testing and development facilities for the product prototype, and produced three different variants of SterilMask. Further testing has been conducted by the University with coronavirus bacteria.
Martin King, Operations Manager at KMD Company and The Sherwood Group commented:
“We are very pleased to be working closely with the University and their partners to assist with this very important and interesting project. Our team have worked closely with the experts and have been fully committed to make this a success. We can’t wait to see the final product live within the NHS protecting the staff and patients, and hopefully assist getting us all through this difficult time.”
The project is funded by Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, who are investing up to £191 million to fund single and collaborative research and development projects, with the aim to help all sectors of the UK rebuild after the effects of Covid-19.
Innovate UK Executive Chair Dr Ian Campbell said:
“In these difficult times we have seen the best of British business innovation. The pandemic is not just a health emergency but one that impacts society and the economy. ‘SterilMask’, along with every initiative Innovate UK has supported through this fund, is an important step forward in driving sustainable economic development. Each one is also helping to realise the ambitions of hard-working people.”
In addition to collaborating with University of Nottingham and industrial partners, KMD Company and The Sherwood Group are focussing on investment into their own face mask manufacturing facilities. This includes the production of high quality, type II medical grade face masks in the UK, which further supports the fight against coronavirus.
